Preface
Humanity faced its biggest challenge in the form of an unprecedented pandemic for the last two years. The resilience of its people, the medical machinery and quick response from authorities put us in pole position to redefine and build a robust medical infrastructure. However, the world around us is staring at another crisis in the form a silent epidemic – Diabetes.
While the diabetes numbers across the world are on a meteoric rise, the numbers close to home post-pandemic are equally alarming – new studies from health experts have found that a significant percentage of the patients who required hospitalisation after contracting Covid, are reporting with diabetes months later despite zero history of the illness prior to their testing Covid positive.
We at the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), Asia’s largest organization of researchers and healthcare professionals for Diabetes, are committed to improving the lives of people living with diabetes. Our recently concluded 100-days Defeat Diabetes Campaign set out to detect undiagnosed diabetes, initiate treatment and build the importance of blood sugar levels as the fifth vital sign. The world around us needs aggressive diabetes prevention strategies that will create a positive impact and tackle the problems in our society.
These were very strong reasons for us at RSSDI to put together logical solutions in ensuring our population are making informed choices when it comes to their health and wellbeing. This was a primary reason and an opportune time to launch our magazine that will provide people with the right information which is coherent, simple to follow, and arms them with the right solutions to manage and keep diabetes at bay.
With this, I welcome you to the Inaugural Edition of ‘Diabetes Mirror’, a platform focused on advocacy, research, education, important and simple tips, and experiences from experts that will help you lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives. Here, no topic is off limits and it is our mission to ensure maximum people benefit from this endeavour. The editorial board has a strong representation of doctors and expert contributors who have made it a mission to provide support, guidance and relatable experiences for effective diabetes management. We look forward to your support and suggestions in our ‘Letters to the Editor’ section that will be a regular feature from our next issue onwards.
